All about the bolus - automatic correction bolus

Control-IQ technology is a predictive algorithm for an unpredictable world. The automatic correction bolus is a key feature of Control-1Q technology that was designed to help improve your time in range and decrease the work it takes if you miss a bolus or miscount carbs.

Detects and Corrects

Many decisions and distractions can get thrown into the mix of daily life to make the task of managing your diabetes even more challenging at times (like miscounting carbs or forgetting to bolus).

The t:slim X2 insulin pump with Control-IQ technology is the only automated insulin delivery (AID) system with a true predictive automatic correction bolus that can be customised for your needs.

Control-IQ technology uses the 30-minute predicted glucose value to automatically adjust insulin. If predicted to be greater than 10 mmol/L, an automatic correction bolus (up to one an hour) may be delivered. The predicted glucose value is used in the calculation of the dose amount, and automatically delivers 60% of that dose.

Dose Calculation Example

There are two different methods for receiving corrective insulin. This example shows how the calculation is different between a manual correction vs. an automatic correction.

Because the automatic correction bolus utilises the Correction Factor in the Personal Profile to influence the dose calculation. Your healthcare team can fine-tune this setting to help customise the strength of the automated bolus dose.

Postprandial Impact

Prior to starting your automated insulin delivery therapy, you may have been taught to check your glucose two hours after meals and correct a high if needed. These after-meal corrections are useful for foods that are especially difficult to determine carbohydrate content.

Example: A pie includes the crust and the filling, which have multiple carb sources such as flour, sugars and thickener/starch. These ingredients are especially tedious to add correctly. If you underestimate the carbs in your portion of pie, you'll likely need a correction bolus two hours after.

With Control-IQ technology you may be eligible to receive a correction bolus automatically, just 60 minutes after your food bolus. Within the traditional two-hour post meal mark, Control-IQ technology could potentially deliver two automatic correction boluses.

You can spend less time focusing on precise carb counting and COM monitoring and more time on the things you enjoy.

The automatic correction bolus feature of Control-IQ technology may help manage those times when you might forget to bolus.

In the event you forgot to bolus before eating, you can check out these guidelines that may help you adjust your meal bolus based on the amount of time that has lapsed since eating.

RESPONSIBLE USE OF CONTROL-IQ™ TECHNOLOGY

Even with advanced systems such as the t:slim X2 insulin pump with Control-IQ technology, you are still responsible for actively managing your diabetes. Control-IQ technology does not prevent all high and low blood glucose events. The system is designed to help reduce glucose variability, but it requires your accurate input of information, such as meals and periods of sleep or exercise. Control-IQ technology will not function as intended unless you use all system components, including your CGM, infusion sets and pump cartridges, as instructed. Importantly, the system cannot adjust your insulin dosing if the pump is not receiving CGM readings. Since there are situations and emergencies that the system may not be capable of identifying or addressing, always pay attention to your symptoms and treat according to your healthcare provider’s recommendations.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

  • If your glucose alerts and CGM readings do not match your symptoms and expectations, you should perform a fingerstick to confirm your blood glucose level.
  • If glucose values are predicted to be above 10.0 mmol/L, Control-IQ technology calculates a correction bolus using the Personal Profile settings and a target of 6.1 mmol/L and delivers 60% of that value. An Automatic Correction Bolus will not occur within 60 minutes of a bolus that has been delivered or cancelled.
  • Software updates are only available to customers who are in warranty at the time they update their pump, and may require additional training.
  • Dexcom CGM sold separately. Transmitter can only be paired with one medical device (either a Dexcom receiver or t:slim X2 insulin pump) and one consumer device (phone or tablet) at the same time.
  • Control-IQ Technology is not a substitute for active self-management of your diabetes.
