Managing Diabetes on the Go: How the t:slim X2™ Enhances Mobility

The t:slim X2™ is the first insulin pump of its kind: it’s a small, highly portable device that allows for remote software updates and helps you manage your diabetes on the go.1,2
With over 300,000 current active users, the t:slim X2™ insulin pump enables many people living with type 1 diabetes to stay active while keeping their blood glucose in range.3 In this article, we review the main features and benefits of this unique device.
t:slim X2™ portability
The t:slim X2™ is small, light and easy to carry around, making it a great option for a portable insulin pump.
At 7.95 cm in length, 5.08 cm in width and 1.52 cm in height, the t:slim X2™ insulin pump is no larger than the palm of your hand.4 In fact, the pump is up to 38% smaller than similar closed-loop system devices.1
The t:slim X2™ insulin pump may be small, but it can pack a punch. It weighs just 113 grams but includes a full cartridge of up to 300 units of insulin.1,4
Its small size and weight make the t:slim X2™ great on the go and easy to travel with. When you next go on holiday, rest assured that the device is suited for air travel and can safely go through metal detectors.5 However, it’s not designed to go through X-ray machines, so never place your insulin pump in a full body scanner or baggage X-ray machine.5
T:slim X2™’s rechargeable battery
TheThe t:slim™ features a convenient rechargeable battery, so you can charge it on the go using a micro-USB port.1,4
The lack of disposable batteries in t:slim X2™ also means that you’re better prepared for emergency situations — when your battery runs out, all you have to do is find a power socket and recharge it.1
However, t:slim X2™ has a long-lasting battery life. It also offers low-power alerts with plenty of time in advance, which will ensure you’re well-prepared for any situation.4
T:slim X2™’s battery life
Once fully charged, the battery is designed to last up to four days if you’re using the pump with an integrated continuous glucose monitor (CGM), and seven days if you’re not using the CGM.4
However, remember that how long the battery lasts varies from person to person and depends on several factors, such as:4
- How long you keep the display on
- How many reminders you set
- How often you get alerts and alarms
- Whether the sound or vibration is on
- Your insulin use

Managing Diabetes on the Go: How the t:slim X2™ Enhances Mobility
Predicting your glucose levels
The pump can be used on its own or with an integrated CGM.1 The t:slim X2™ uses a unique CGM system called Dexcom G6 or G7.1
When paired with Dexcom G6 or G7, the t:slim X2™ calculates when it’s time for your next insulin dose.1 The pump uses a special technology that predicts high and low glucose levels 30 minutes in advance based on the CGM readings.1
The t:slim X2™ automatically reduces or stops the basal insulin delivery to help prevent hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose) or increases insulin to prevent hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose).1 This increases the time in range (the percentage of time your blood glucose level is within a 'target' range) for its users.1
A note of precaution
It’s important to remember that the t:slim X2™ pump and its CGM technology don’t replace active diabetes management.1 When using the pump, make sure you:1
- Use the devices appropriately and follow their user instructions
- Regularly check that the pump and CGM monitor are working properly
- Enter the right information into your CGM, such as your meals, sleep and exercise
- Pay attention to your symptoms
- Regularly monitor your blood glucose levels to make sure the devices work well and match your symptoms
- Manage your diabetes as discussed with your healthcare team

Targeted blood glucose management for active people
The pump’s predictive technology improves time in range, both over 24 hours and overnight, when compared to a sensor-augmented pump.6 This empowers users to worry less about their blood glucose levels and enjoy life more by engaging in their favourite activities.2
Furthermore, the t:slim X2™ has dedicated sleep and exercise activity settings that allow users to manage their blood glucose levels in specific situation.1
Finally, the pump allows users to set up to six personal profiles, each with their own basal insulin rates, insulin-to-carbohydrates ratios (ICR) and correction factors (CF).7
These features make the t:slim X2™ especially suitable for people with type 1 diabetes who have active lifestyles, such as:7
- People who work night shifts
- Athletes and people who frequently participate in sports
- People who are going through a particularly stressful time, either at work or in their personal life
- People who have to stay active despite illness or being on their period
Other special features of the t:slim X2™
The t:slim X2™ boasts several attributes that set it apart from other insulin pumps. In addition to the benefits described above, the t:slim X2™ features:1
- A sleek and modern design
- A large colour touchscreen that makes it simple and easy to use
- A software that can be updated regularly, enabling users to stay up to date with the latest technology developments without having to purchase a new pump
